Strong, warm pine release with notes of lemon sherbet coming to the fore.
Very bold berries from the blaeberries, rowan and hawthorn.
These give way to the deeper earthier notes that are hidden in the original Rock Rose, such as angelica and orris.
So smooth you can drink this neat or just with ice!
Rhodiola rosea is a plant that thrives in colder climes making it ideal for the fresh breezes of Caithness. We use the root of the plant which adds a delicate floral note to our gin. Over a thousand years ago, the Vikings would harvest wild exposed cliffs to gather Rhodiola rosea. This was thought to give them the extra strength to continue on their long arduous journeys.
The deciduous tree, sometimes known as mountain ash, produces a brilliant red berry-like fruit. The tree is very much celebrated as a ‘hero’ in many mythology and folklore tales. In Norse mythology the rowan was called the ‘Salvation of Thor’ as the Thunder God, Thor was once saved from drowning by a rowan branch. Incidentally, our nearest town, Thurso, was named after Thor! The tree is a hero for Rock Rose too as its gorgeous red fruit imparts a delicate flavour adding to the berryful taste.
Angelica was once valued as a remedy against the plague, poisons and even as a protection against witchcraft, if you carried the dried root about on your person. It has been used in confectionery but is now mainly used in drinks. Angelica root is in our Original Edition recipe and when the distillation is cut at a higher alcohol strength, as in our Navy Edition, the deep earthy notes really begin to shine through.
This is part of our commitment to responsible drinking.
We tried a miniature of Navy Strength gin a few months ago and were delighted with the flavour. My husband now has his first bottle, a surprise birthday gift, I’m sure it won’t be the last. We prefer it with just our usual tonic, nothing else added, to enjoy the flavour. Well done Dunnet bay Distillers, we’ve been hooked on Rock Rose Gin since our first visit when you had just started brewing!

We were greeted with a brolly & smile at the entrance and only waited 10 mins before we had our very acceptable ‘social distance’ “shop”
A delightful experience and lots of superb choices and special select delicacies and of course candles.
We bought Gin, Whisky, candles and chocolate & treats.
